WHAT TOPS SHOULD I WEAR IF I HAVE A TUMMY

Welcome to part 2 of our fashion series on the tummy. If you haven’t read part 1, you can catch up on the story here and enjoy life-changing fashion advice for your tummy, just kidding but not really.

Over the years, we’ve heard many clients complain about the tops in their closet. Everything from “it’s hard to find tops for my tummy / I don’t have a variety of tops / I need tops / [insert yours here]”. Unfortunately, these frustrations force many people to buy baggy, and shapeless tops.

If you’re reading this, there’s also a chance your closet is full of oversized tops because you’re worried your actual size will show your tummy — another myth that plagues many of our clients. I understand and empathize with the fear around “your tummy being on display”. It’s very natural to want to hide the top half of your body because you’re afraid to show it, but trust me there are tops that will work with your body.

Today, I’m going to liberate you, your closet and your future shopping trips so you don’t buy the same oversized top in 5 different colours and have no variety in your closet.

4 STYLES YOU WILL LOVE

  1. Wrap around or side-cinched tops

  2. Peplum tops

  3. Long vests

  4. Cardigans or Long blazers

BONUS TIP - An amazing bra is essential because it frames your torso so please start here!

Before you read on ..

First acknowledge and process the fear you may have around showing your tummy. When we put a client in a “fitted top”, their immediate reaction is discomfort. Not because it’s too tight, but because they’re afraid that their tummy is “showing”. Truth is, we are our worst critics and often focus on the worst parts of our body. My advice is to go easy on yourself as you try fitted and different styles of tops. Combine fitted tops with flowy pieces (eg scarves, open cardigans or vests) until you’re fully comfortable with the fitted style.

4 TUMMY-FLATTERING TOPS

Wrap Your Tummy In This Gorgeous Top!

A wrapped top will do wonders for your tummy, similar to how a wrapped dress compliments your tummy. This top is perfect because as it wraps around your tummy, it also highlights the smallest part of your body, creating a beautiful shape you will love.

Give Me Some Peplummm

A peplum, or fit and flare top, is probably the most understated top that every closet needs. When picking a peplum look for:

1. Where the flare begins. You want the flare to compliment your tummy so make sure it highlights smallest part of your body before it flares out.

2. The material of the top. If the flare begins further down, make sure the material is structured/heavier as this will hold your tummy in.

Invest In A Vest

What we love about long vests, especially ones with a belt, is that tying it in the front highlights your waist while tying it in the back creates an hourglass shape.

Either option gives your body a shape while option two (back tie) also creates a “curtain” effect for your your tummy. Meaning only a small window of your tummy will show while the side of your body is covered — a perfect solution for those still getting comfortable showing their tummy.

Long Cardigans Create Long Lines

Why do we love long cardigans? First, they have a slimming effect because of the lines they create along your body. Next, they allow you to wear fitted tops underneath because of the curtain effect (small portion of your tummy is showing).

Long Blazers Have A Slimming Effect
