WHAT CLOTHES SHOULD I WEAR ?

Can you relate to the question above? This is probably the most common question and complaint I hear from A LOT, if not all, of my clients. Some will say, “I have a lot of clothes but don’t know what to wear”. It’s the funniest thing to me because often times their closet is MUCH bigger than mine. If you know me at all, or have read my past blogs, you will know that my closet is shockingly small. To be honest it wasn’t always by choice, I love clothes and I love shopping, but ever since University days and having zero money for clothes, I’ve somehow maintained a small closet. And now it’s part of my mantra. I realized …

“THE MORE CLOTHES I HAD, THE LESS I WORE”

*Read that last sentence again for emphasis* Another thing I realized was …

ONLY A FEW CLOTHES IN MY CLOSET MADE ME FEEL INCREDIBLY confident. I always had favourites even if i bought more.

HOW TO INSPIRE CLOSET CONFIDENCE

Get this, it’s not the quantity of clothes that makes you feel confident with your closet or outfits, it’s the quality of pieces you have. It’s unreal how profound this epiphany is right, you can thank me later ;).

So how do you go about finding the right clothes that inspire confidence ? They say the best things in life are the simplest so let’s see what this means with closet confidence.

FIRST, KNOW YOUR BODY IN AND OUT

Here’s something I’ve noticed as a stylist, shopping gets infinitely easier once you know your body, or in my case, the body of the person I’m shopping for. At some point in your life, you have probably experienced a frustrating shopping trip where everything you picked did not flatter your body - leaving you with a shattered confidence.

I’ve gotten to the point in my life where I can look at clothes and have a good idea of how it will fit me. E.G

  • I won’t EVER try low rise or Levi’s jeans lol. No butt coverage. (doesn’t work for me)

  • I don’t like loose round neck tops. I have a big bust so I find that the lack of structure makes my chest look bigger than it is. (again, not for me)

  • I also stay away from spaghetti tops with thick straps that sit right at my shoulders. I have defined shoulders and arms and these tank tops highlight them in a not-so-nice-way. They make my shoulders and arms look big. (just me)

SECOND, FIND CLOTHES FOR YOUR BODY

Here’s another epiphany, not all stores carry clothes and brands for everyone’s body type. And even if the store does carry clothes for your body type, you MUST pick the ones that compliment your body and shape.

PS: Don’t get fixated on sizes, each store caters to a different audience and or size preference. Sizes are not universal!

In the image above, you can see how each skirt is suggested based on the different body shapes. By catering the clothes to our body, we have a higher chance of selecting an item that flatters our body. And that’s how we ought to think when we go shopping, it should be about our bodies first, not the clothes.

What does that mean for you ?

go get measured …

discover and embrace your body problem areas …

consider why you prefer some clothes vs. others on your body … this helps with future purchases
